The origins of Freedhem Gravel: In 2012 a few local riders took inspiration from rides like the Almanzo 100 and embarked on a ride that took them through the town of Freedhem, MN. In 2016 these riders built off that route and began leading group rides and eventually an organized race known as the Freedhem 76.
Today’s Freedhem Gravel: In 2024 The Brainerd Family YMCA Gravel Grinders took the reins of the event. Freedhem Gravel is now a multi distance gravel grinder, and an open run held on some of North Central Minnesota’s finest gravel, MMRs, and trails in celebration of Independence Day.
Who are the Brainerd Family YMCA Gravel Grinders: The Brainerd YMCA Gravel Grinders is a Gravel Cycling Club organized by a group of passionate volunteers whose primary mission is to get as many people on two wheels as possible. The Brainerd Gravel Grinders host weekly Thursday Night rides that attract up to 40+ riders, along with special events and clinics throughout the year. These events have been historically free of charge. Proceeds generated from Freedhem Gravel will be utilized to expand upon our mission to make gravel cycling accessible and to create a friendly inclusive community for all. The Gravel Grinders will strive to keep the Spirit of Gravel alive through Freedhem Gravel for years to come.
